For Whom The Bell Tolls Essay -- Literary Analysis, Ernest Hemingway
The novel For Whom the Bell Tolls, written by Ernest Hemingway, is a story of passionate love throughout the brutality of the Spanish Civil War. Hemingway uses his personal experiences to portray the true meaning and feeling of this book. Ernest Miller Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899 in Oak Park, a suburb of Chicago, Illinois. The neighborhood he grew up in was straight-laced and rigidly Protestant. Hemingway started his literary career publishing his work in his school magazine. Later on in life, he signed up to join the military in World War II, but was rejected due to his defective left eye from birth. Instead, he enlisted in the Missouri National Guard and remained on the lookout for opportunities to progress to the front. In 1918, he sailed to Europe to become an ambulance driver in Northern Italy. There, Hemingway was seriously injured and while in the hospital fell in love with his nurse, Agnes Hannah Von Kurowsky. She was the model that Hemingway used as Catherin e Barkley in A Farewell To Arms. In 1919, he returned to Oak Park and earned a medal for his valor in Italy. He and his wife had their first son, John, in October 1923. Three years later, in 1926, Hemingway published his first novel, The Sun Also Rises. Sadly, on December 6, 1928, he learned that his father had committed suicide. Years later, during his divorce with his second wife, he wrote For Whom the Bell Tolls and it was published in October of 1940. The next month, Hemingway married his third wife, Martha Gellhorn. In 1944, he traveled to London and not only fell in love with Mary Welsh, but was involved in a serious car accident and was thought to be dead. In 1945, his third marriage failed and later that year was in yet another severe c... ... brutality of the Spanish Civil War. Hemingwayââ¬â¢s simplistic language style, war imagery, mountainous setting, and theme of a heroic protagonist all contribute to his personal experiences in life and at war. Much of his style resembles the personal experiences he had in life with family, love, and war. The imagery that is applied in this piece of literature mirrors what Hemingway had seen and imagined during his service in Italy and his experiences during the relationships which he partook. The setting represents the area in which Hemingway had seen and envisioned Spain. The various themes of this story describe Hemingwayââ¬â¢s political views on war and outlook on the morals of life. In conclusion, the qualities that Ernest Hemingway possesses in his writing skills are truly remarkable and they are evidently depicted in this amazing piece of classic literature.

Con Artists, and What They Do :: essays research papers
The world we live in today requires us to be good at whatever career we choose or we are not able to support ourselves. In order to be the best we can be, we usually work hard, practice our chosen field, and put forth all effort needed to make us good at what we do. There are many ways we can choose to support ourselves. Careers are varied and we have many jobs to choose from. With so many opportunities open to people today, it should be easy to select a career that gives you an honest living. We all want to trust others and hope that people are honest. This, wanting to trust, is what some people use in their chosen careers. People who use others in order to gain an income are known as con artists. To con people means to swindle, or cheat, them and being an artist means that one is very skilled at what he does so a con artist is very much capable of cheating others to make a profit. à à à à à Con artists are everywhere. They seem to sense when other are vulnerable, such as older people. Our elderly come from a time when people believed others. They truth their neighbors and friends. If they say they will do something, they mean they will do it. Our elderly are simply too trusting. It is hard for them to look another person in the eye and lie. It is hard for them to take something that does not belong to them. Unfortunately, the con artist does not have a problem with either lying to people or stealing from them. He has his chosen profession down to the art he has practiced. He is good at what he does because he works at being good at it. The con artist is an actor. He should win an Oscar for his performances. He is able to change personalities like a chameleon changes colors. The con artist can be anything he needs to be for whatever ââ¬Å"jobâ⬠he is working on at the time. He usually is a very likable person who is able to blend in with others on any occasion or any given situation. Sadly, if these swindlers had chosen to work an honest job, they probably would have been very good at what they did. It requires more planning and convincing to rip people off than it takes to work at a legitimate career.

Privatization vs Public Sector
What is privatization? It is the process of transferring ownership of aà business, enterprise, agency, public service or public property from theà public sectorà (a government) to theà private sector, either to a business that operates for a profit or to aà non-profit organization. The term can also mean government outsourcingà of services or functions to private firms, What is public sector undertaking? In India, public sector undertaking (PSU) is a term used for a government-owned corporation (company in the public sector). From my point of view, privatization is going to be a remedy for the financial ailments of our public sector undertaking.Letââ¬â¢s discuss some factors about these two types of organizations. 1. Performance. Public sector undertaking tends to beà bureaucratic. A political government may only be motivated to improve a function when its poor performance becomes politically sensitive. 2. Increased efficiency. Private companies and firms have a grea ter incentive to produce moreà goods and servicesà for the sake of reachingà customer satisfactionà and hence increasing profits. A public organization would not be as productive due to the lack of financing allocated by the entire government's budget that must consider other areas of the economy. . Specialization. A privateà businessà has the ability to focus all relevant human and financial resources onto specific functions. A public sector undertaking does not have the necessary resources toà specializeà its goods and services as a result of the general products provided to the greatest number of people in theà population. 4. Corruption. A public sector undertaking is prone toà corruption; decisions are made primarily for political reasons, personal gain of the decision-maker, rather than economic ones.Corruption in a public sector undertaking affects the ongoing asset stream and company performance, whereas any corruption that may occur during the privatizati on process is a one-time event and does not affect ongoing cash flow or performance of the company. 5. Accountability. Managers of privately owned companies are accountable to their owners/shareholders and to the consumer, and can only exist and thrive where needs are met. Managers of publicly owned companies are required to be more accountable to the broader community and to political ââ¬Å"stakeholdersâ⬠.This can reduce their ability to directly and specifically serve the needs of their customers, and can bias investment decisions away from otherwise profitable areas. 6. Goals. A political government tends to run an industry or company forà politicalà goals rather thanà economicà ones. 7. Capital. Privately held companies can sometimes more easily raise investment capital in the financial markets. public sector undertaking industries have to compete with demands from other government departments and special interests. 8. Lack of market discipline.Poorly managed publi c sector undertaking companies are insulated from the same discipline as private companies, which could go bankrupt, have their management removed, or be taken over by competitors. Publicly owned enterprises in competitive environments would not perform better than privately owned companies in the same circumstances in terms of profitability, Privatization reduces the net transfer to public sector undertaking from government as unnecessary subsidies. These transfers become positive if the government actually starts collecting taxes from privatized firms. Thank you.

Five Points of Architecture
Five Points of ArchitectureLe Corbusier is one of the most important designers from the twentieth century. He is known as one of the innovators of modern architecture due to many of his thoughts andââ¬Ërecipesââ¬â¢within architecture. One of his most celebrated wasà ââ¬ËThe Five Point of a New Architectureââ¬â¢that he had explained in ââ¬ËL'Esprit Nouveauââ¬â¢Ã and the book ââ¬Ëà Vers une architectureââ¬â¢, which he had been developing throughout the 1920s. Le Corbusierââ¬â¢ development of this thought altered the architectural promenade in a new manner, which was presented in 1926. [ 1 ] The five points are as follows: pilotis, the roof garden, free program, free facade, and the horizontal window. Le Corbusier used these points as a structural footing for most of his architecture up until the 1950ââ¬â¢s, which are apparent in many of his designs. The essayââ¬ËLes Cinq points d'une architecture nouvelleââ¬â¢by Le Corbusier focuses on inquiries that are raised within architectural design, proposing a foundation and agreement in it. Similar texts for illustration the advancement ofââ¬Ëcelluleââ¬â¢and figures of the Maison Standardisee, do non hold relation to the design procedure of the five points. The Modulor, which is the survey of proportions of the human organic structure graduated table that is used as a system to be after a figure of Le Corbusierââ¬â¢s edifices, is another theoretical effort, which did non accomplish a proper relation to the design procedure and besides the architectural hunt for signifier that personifies the five points. On the other manus, these thoughts can be portrayed more freely as ââ¬Ëmerely theoretical ideasââ¬â¢ . [ 2 ] One exclusion is the construct of the tracis regulateurs ( modulating lines ) , which uses proportions of geometry in edifices. It predicted certain thoughts behind the five points in a figure of facets. The first point is the piloti, which are columns or wharfs that elevate a construction off the land. The fact that the construction is lifted provides many functional advantages. As the pilotis raise the edifice off the land, it allows circulation beneath the house, which frees the edifice site, and allows a private road, parking infinite, or a garden to be placed beneath the house. The pilotis provides many advantages, and besides new constructional possibilities. The artistic minutes every bit good as the drawn-out utility are the consequences of thoseââ¬Ërecherches assiduesââ¬â¢and thoseââ¬Ëacquis de laboratoireââ¬â¢[ 3 ] . The same country is besides gained on the level roof. This country is known as the following point, which is the roof garden. This is to equilibrate the green country that was already used by the edifice and substituted it onto the roof, which is so used for domestic intents. Free program is the following point, which means the floor infinite can be arranged freely without the concern for back uping walls into suites. Replacing interior supporting columns from walls spliting the infinite, and traveling the construction of the edifice to the outside is a manner to accomplish this. Le Corbusier designed an unfastened floor construction called the Dom-ino house in which the theoretical account removed supporting wall and the back uping beams for the ceiling. This innovation was most unexpected at clip ; it was aââ¬Ëforecast of the potencies of strengthened concrete, of mass-production, of human graduated table, of the modern mill.ââ¬â¢ [ 4 ] The frame did non depend on the floor programs of the house, giving the designer freedom when planing the inside. Free facade is another point. It is the ability of planing the facade freely as the walls are non-supporting, which is the consequence of the free program. The following point is the horizontal window. This allows the facade to be cut along its full length. By making so it allows maximal light, better airing and besides gives positions of the environing pace, which is apparent in the Villa Savoye. The five points were demonstrated in many of Le Corbusier ââ¬Ës architecture throughout his calling. One of first designs that Le Corbusier attempted to include the points in was the Maisons Citrohan. The house was developed through different versions. Numerous elements of the houses design turned out to be indispensable factors, which make up Le Corbusiers manner. Certain features of the Maison Citrohan can be detected in most of the Villa in the 1920ââ¬â¢s. [ 5 ] Maison Citrohan introduced theââ¬Ëfive points of new architectureââ¬â¢ .The house was elevated by pilotis leting free circulation on the land, and besides consisted of a reinforced-concrete frame construction, which was achieved from the Dom-inoââ¬â¢s constructional system. The unfastened infinite created by the pilotis and the level roof increases the little country that already exists. It besides had a roof garden/terrace. Le Corbusier voiced himself on the topic of the Maison Citrohan in the first volume of theââ¬ËOevre compldteââ¬â¢:ââ¬Å"Stuttgart, c'est I'occasion enfin! ââ¬Å" .Le Corbusier did non talk of single objects or designs ; he talked about the changeless development of an thought stretched over many instances. [ 6 ] Le Corbusier studied the indispensable doctrines of Egyptian, Hindu, Byzantine, and Grecian architecture inââ¬ËVers une architectureââ¬â¢ ,which is a aggregation of essays that supports survey of the construct of modern architecture. [ 7 ] Egyptian and Grecian architecture were peculiarly of import for Le Corbusier ââ¬Ës application of the five points. From Egyptian architecture, Le Corbusier acquired the thought of symmetricalness and repeat. In add-on, Le Corbusier obtained the impression of motion and reverses from Grecian architecture. The lesson of regular repeat from Egyptian architecture, as mentioned above, provided the thought of utilizing repeat in perpendicular supports that Le Corbusier would subsequently use to his architecture as ââ¬Å" a changeless graduated table, a beat, a reposeful meter â⬠. Le Corbusiers design theories were put in pattern to a certain degree within a figure of his designs such as the Maison Cook, the Villa Stein, and besides at the Villa Savoye. In these edificesââ¬Ëthe regular grid of columns served as a foil to the organic forms of the curving walls and stepss, which together combined to form a pleasant architectural promenade with unsymmetrically balanced viewsââ¬â¢harmonizing to the lessons of Grecian architecture. [ 8 ] Similar to the Citrohan House, the Villa Stein had a roof, which became a patio garden ; on a regular basis spaced structural wharfs, which allowed freely curved interior dividers, and besides horizontal Windowss that extended across frontages. The Maison Cook was a patio house. The upper floors of the house were supported by concrete piloti, and the land floor consisted of a unfastened program which had a parking infinite, entry, and a patio. The roof was besides used as a garden patio. Le Corbusier wanted to demo that the dividers of the suites on each floor were independent of structural supports, therefore the dividers were curved. [ 9 ] The Villa Savoye follows the five points best purely, and can be considered as a reinforced program of Le Corbusierââ¬â¢s five points. The exterior maintains the thought of symmetricalness as all four lifts are truly similar, which consist of horizontal Windowss and gaps running the breadth of the facade at the 2nd floor degree, supported by on a regular basis spaced pilotis. [ 10 ] Within the points, the free program is the most of import in the design, where the big wall curves freely between the pilotis on the land floor, which reflects the thought of the ââ¬Ëfree planââ¬â¢ the strongest. Equally much as the five points have contributed to the development of modern architecture greatly, some points such as the horizontal Windowss are non necessary in footings of the designing of good architecture. Besides the thought of the roof garden has been criticised over the old ages for leaking, it besides would be considered really unusual in domestic houses in states such as the UK, as they use the more traditional pitched roof as it seems more homely. Furthermore, Le Corbusier abandoned the thought of the piloti shortly after some point ; his ulterior work does non purely follow the points. Le Corbusierââ¬â¢sââ¬ËFive Points in Architectureââ¬â¢pronunciamento, as explained above, has had great influence on modern architecture. This is apparent in The Villa Savoye, which summed up the five points, which turned out to be a chef-d'oeuvre of the twentieth century design and one of the greatest plants by Le Corbusier. The five points have allowed a broad assortment of thoughts and possibilities within planing architecture even to this twenty-four hours such as the usage of free facade in Zaha Hadidââ¬â¢s Performing Arts Center in Hague ( 2010 ).
The Hunger Games and Child Soldiers: the Sad Truth
Hunger Games and Child Soldiers: The Sad Truth The Hunger Games, by Suzanne Collins,(Collins) and Child Soldiers are intertwined together because they are both children fighting for their lives. The children are alike because they got executed into being prisoners, that fight to their deaths and kill savagely. The children live similarly because they both have organizations or sponsors helping them get out of their situation. Lastly, the children experience the same emotions because The Hunger Games(Collins) is kind of like a realistic version of child soldiers. The Hunger Games (Collins) and child soldiers think alike because children from both scenarios are fighting for their lives through brutality, hunger, and savageness. The Hunger Games(Collins) and Child Soldiers are intertwined together because they are both children fighting for their lives. The children are alike because they are both prisoners that are forced to fight and kill savagely. Lastly, the children are alike because The Hunger Games(Collins) is kind of like a realistic version of child soldiers. The Hunger Games (Collins) and child soldiers are alike because children from both scenarios are fighting for their lives through brutality, hunger, and savageness. Child Soldiers, like The Hunger Games(Collins), are very alike because they are both young children forced to fight and kill savagely. According to War Child, a reliable organization aimed at saving child soldiers, Child soldiers are kids that are under the age of 18 who are used to fight and kill in wars and for power. (warchild) Children as young as 12 years old fight and kill each other like itââ¬â¢s a friendly game. These children should be learning how to associate with other kids and play at the playgrounds with friends. Instead of normal childhood memories, demonic people such as Joseph Kony corrupt their minds into be lieving it's tolerable to kill. (Kony 2012, Invisible children inc. ) This flabbergasting organization Invisible Children Inc. , made Joseph Kony famous so he would get caught. According to the child soldiers global report, there is over 300,000 children in almost every country where there is warfare or conflict happening that still use child soldiers to combat. facts and figures on child soldiers) In The Hunger Games there is 24 tributes every year. (The Hunger Games, Collins). If all the tributes are added up over the years, all the myriad deaths in both The Hunger Games and child soldiers is a drastic tragedy. (collins) Child Soldiers and The Hunger Games are poor children forced to fight fiercely. If the children refuse to fight, they will be killed instantaneously. (The Hunger Games, Kony 2012) These children will do anything to survive even if it means to eradicate their peers who are in the same situation as them, or secretly be in love with someone.Katniss and Peeta, from Th e Hunger Games, are secretly in love for the cameras to get sponsors, only for survival. (Collins) In The Hunger Games, if the tributes have information about something, the capitol will kidnap them, and turn them into beasts, which then the capital tortures them to death instead of letting them live a profligate death. (Collins) For example, Peeta is kidnapped from the Capitol and is turned into a beast and tries to kill Katniss against his will, a disastrous trick from the Capitol. Collins) Child soldiers and The Hunger Games relate because both the leaders of the child soldiers, and the Capitol, from The Hunger Games, will kill the children if they violate their rules. (Invisible children Inc. , Collins) The Hunger Games and child soldiers are alike because they both have organizations or sponsors who are exasperating to save the adolescents' lives and contribute them stipulations for survival. (Invisible Children Inc. , Collins) In the Hunger Games Katniss has various sponsors se nding her food, medicine, and weapons to help her outlast, and make it out of the games. Collins) The sponsors who send items for the tributes survival, costs a great deal of money to give to the tributes, even if itââ¬â¢s just a crumb of bread. (The Hunger Games, Collins) Organizations trying to help children get out of being child soldiers are like the sponsors facilitating tributes. Both sponsors and tributes traverse over trying to scoop up money to buy equipment to donate. Some famous organizations, aimed at helping child soldiers get out of being a soldier, are The Invisible Children Inc. , and War child. War Child and Invisible People) Child soldiers, with the help of organizations, can get out of warfare and have education, plus return home safely. (War Child, Invisible Children Inc. ) In The Hunger Games it costs a lot to send to send the tributes gifts from their sponsors. (Collins)The reason this has to do with child soldiers is because the organizations that help child ren don't have much funds. Ann O Neil, from CNN, thinks the organizations do not have much funds to help child soldiers so they are not as effective as the organizations could be. Ann O'Neill,Cnn, Kids turned into Terrifying Killers) Collins probably got the idea of having sponsors from the child soldiers organizations. Some children who have been through the cruelty and savageness they go through, end up never getting their innocence back. In The Hunger Games, the living tributes have visions of killing each other, which end up haunting them through gruelling, unmistaken mayhem known as a nightmare, which Katniss needs Peeta to help her get through. (Collins)ââ¬Å"I have lost all my dreams, all my hopes for the future, I feel like a dead personâ⬠, a former child soldier from the LRA says. War Child) Many tributes from The Hunger Games and child soldiers are troubled for the rest of their life after killing people. (Collins, Kony 2012 video) Child Soldiers is like a realistic version of The Hunger Games. In the novel, Katniss is poor with the rest of the districts compared to the capitol. (Collins) It is like Africa or other places where child soldiers exist with savagery. The children are barely fed and child soldiers sometimes even have to be savage and eat parts of dead children. Facts and Figures on Child Soldiers) There is not words to explain how inhumane both The Hunger Games and the thought of child soldiers are. The idiosyncrasy of the leaders is unbelievable when it results to having children fight. The reason child soldiers are taken more easily is because families live in bad areas from poverty and they get kidnapped. (Kony 2012 Video) The children are easier to prey on if they are in poverty. In one article on CNN, a child soldier said he couldn't wait to be old enough to get out of being a child soldier so he could be a hitman for drug cartels to put food on the table. Stolen Kids Turned into Terrifying Killers, CNN) This is like The Hunger Games lifers who train their whole lives to be in the games for fame. Lastly, both The Hunger Games(Collins) and child soldiers will do cruel things, because they are so troubled from the society they live in. Lastly, child soldiers and The Hunger Games both hope to get out of their situation. Child soldiers and tributes from The Hunger Games(Collins) don't fight back to their leaders, because there is hope to stop fighting or get out of the arena in The Hunger Games. Collins) Children fighting for their lives who are savagely forced to fight is the realistic version of The Hunger Games. Children fight for their lives through hardships like having the pressure of taking care of their family through getting paid of being a child soldier, or in Katnissââ¬â¢s case, making sure she will make it back out of The Hunger Games to be the provider for her family again. (Collins&War Child) Child soldiers and the tributes from The Hunger Games suffer many things, but in the end it comes dow n to the question of do all humans have savage secretly bestowed in them? The Hunger Games(Collins) and Child Soldiers are intertwined together because they are both children fighting for their lives. The children are alike because they are both prisoners that are forced to fight and kill savagely. The children are similar because they both have organizations or sponsors helping them get out of their situation.
